The son of Valais mountain farmers, Bernard Crettaz, was an imminent ethnologist and sociologist. Creator of the "cafés mortels/death cafés", Bernard Crettaz has made death his life's work. He was known as "Mr. Death".
In front of the camera, Bernard spent four years questioning his life. The ageing man, plagued by doubts, accepted this careful exposure with boldness, curiosity and clarity, letting his powerlessness and resignation shine through. He died at 84, in keeping with a wish he repeated several times in the film. He wanted to face death and hoped to be truly with himself on the day it occurs.
