For decades, mountain farmers have been fighting for their existence in the Alpine region, which has been shaped by tourism and the belief in progress. The films in this retrospective accompany this struggle. (...) The “heroes” are the taciturn farmers, staged against majestic backdrops. But the filmmakers also address the farmers' wives and children, the mountain spirits and grazing cows, the clouds forming over the alpine pastures. From these seemingly supporting characters emerges the real utopian potential of the films, one that suggests a different way of dealing with the planet. (Curator Patrick Holzapfel)
