What does SWISS FILMS do?

The SWISS FILMS Annual Report is out! In our report you can find out who we backed last year and how we showcased our activities for Swiss films, series and XR projects

10.07.2025

SWISS FILMS connects filmmakers, expands reach and provides a broad range of support measures. The report reveals whom we backed last year, how we showcased Switzerland as an innovative coproduction country in Cannes, and why cooperation also drives our new domestic promotion activities.

More than 700 Swiss projects were newly registered in 2024 on the “Swiss Films Portal”, – SWISS FILMS’ database – an all-time high. We publish this data on our website and use it to develop data-based strategies. The portal now contains information on over 8,500 films, series and XR projects.

For the past three years, SWISS FILMS has also supported the distribution of series and XR projects through new initiatives, opening up fresh markets and channels – for example, activities for series at Rome’s MIA, events on Venice’s “Immersive Island”, and the SWISS Series Line-Up on our website.

Boosting international visibility

Launched in 2024, the SWISS FILMS newsletter already has 13,600 subscribers from all over the world. It delivers in-depth coverage of Swiss projects, festivals, talents and their worldwide successes. A major highlight in 2024 was Switzerland’s appearance as Country of Honour at the Cannes Marché du Film, the world’s largest film market. Thanks to more than 40 partners from the fields of culture, the film industry and innovation, the event was a success: a stellar Swiss delegation, audiovisual start-ups and over 1,000 industry players helped position Switzerland as an innovative coproduction partner.

More domestic audience for Swiss cinema

In 2024, SWISS FILMS was commissioned by the Federal Office of Culture to develop marketing measures in order to reach a larger audience and generate more interest in Swiss projects. The Cannes experience showed that collaboration amplifies impact. Going forward, SWISS FILMS will focus on a few high-profile national releases and strategic partnerships to raise awareness of Swiss films.

Support for Swiss productions

In 2024, SWISS FILMS processed 247 support applications and, together with the Federal Office of Culture, awarded CHF 1.2 million: CHF 0.8 million for Distribution Support aimed at international theatrical releases and CHF 0.4 million across seven additional schemes, including the Impact Accelerator for innovative impact-campaigning strategies.
