Three Swiss nominations for FIRST STEPS Award 2009

Films by Swiss directors are in the running in three of the five award categories at the 10th FIRST STEPS Awards in Berlin on August 25, 2009: Irene Ledermann’s 20-minute graduation film “Schonzeit” (Closed Season) (Zurich University of the Arts) is one of the seven films in the “Short films” category (award: 10,000 euros); Michael Koch’s 29-minute graduation film “Polar” by (Academy of Media Arts in Cologne) is among the four nominees competing for the award in the “Fiction films under 60 minutes” (award: 15,000 euros) as well as the award for “Best screenplay” (award: 8,000 euros), for which four films have also been nominated.
The FIRST STEPS Award honours the best graduation films from German-speaking film schools every year. This year 190 films were submitted, 94 of which are fiction films, 42 documentary films and 54 advertising spots. The winners will be announced at the FIRST STEPS award ceremony in the Theater am Potsdamer Platz in Berlin on August 25, 2009.
FIRST STEPS Awards in the “Short and Animation Films” category were presented to three Swiss directors during the past ten years: to Christine Wiederkehr with “Floh!” in 2005; to Ralph Etter with “Wackelkontakt” in 2004; and to Gabriela D`Hondt with “Letzte Hilfe” in 2001.
