Swiss presence in Berlin
30.01.2008
Swiss presence at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival 2008 is most intense on the first weekend of this year’s festival. Actor Joel Basman from Zurich is one of the nine European Shooting Stars to be introduced to an international audience of professionals in the film industry from February 9 – 12 and to stand in the limelight at the Berlinale. Pascal Couchepin, President of the Swiss Confederation, will attend the Berlinale in conjunction with a visit to the German capital and meet with representatives of the film industry at the European Film Market on February 12. The Swiss reception organized by SWISS FILMS on February 10 serves as the meeting point for Swiss and international guests.
The 18-year-old Joel Basman has embarked on a rapid career and was nominated by an international jury as a Shooting Star – together with Stine Fischer Christensen (Denmark), Nicolas Cazalé (France), Hannah Herzsprung (Germany), Zsolt Nagy (Hungary), Elio Germano (Italy), Maryam Hassouni (the Netherlands), Anamaria Marinca (Rumania), Marko Igonda (Slovenia). In the wake of ten successful years, the Shooting Stars event has evolved into a label and become a talent exchange for actors from all over Europe. Among the myriad of highlights is the introduction of the acting newcomers on the stage of the Berlinale Palast, where they will be introduced to the audience by Festival Director Dieter Kosslick and receive the “Studio Hamburg Shooting Stars Award”.
The short film “Lostage” by Swiss film director Bettina Eberhardt will be presented in the “Perspektive Deutsches Kino” section, which was produced during her studies at the Academy for Media Arts in Cologne.
SWISS FILMS will be present at the European Film Market with a stand and market screenings and also attend to the films screened at the Berlinale. The Swiss reception has by now become a fixture at the Berlinale. This year’s reception will be held in the legendary “Cookies” Berliner Club, which cultivates party culture in the rooms of the former French Culture Institute situated in the heart of Berlin.
