The 40-minute film “Praca Maszyn” (“The Work Of The Machines”) by Gilles Lepore is among the 20 films participating in competition of the 21st International Documentary Film Festival of Marseille (July 7-12, 2010). It is in the running for the Grand Prix, as well as the First Film Prize awarded to a debut film by the five-member international jury, presided over this year by Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako. Two Swiss short film productions will also be screened in Marseille: “Cotonov Vanished” by Andreas Fontana and “La forêt” by Lionel Rupp. In addition, the festival will screen twelve half-hour films “France, tour, détour: deux enfants” produced by Anne-Marie Miéville and Jean-Luc Godard for television in 1977.
Gilles Lepore, who is from Jura and completed his postgraduate training with Jerzy Kucia in Cracow, co-directed "Praca Maszyn" with Polish directors Maciej Madracki and Michal Madracki. The film addresses the topic of work and the machine, whereas it mainly deals with what machines do to us and to human perception, made possible through motion picture technology.
The film festival in Marseille ranks among the most important platforms for documentary films in France, together with the Festival Cinéma du Réel in Paris and the Etats Généraux du Film Documentaire in Lussas. In 2008 Olivier Zuchuat won an award for his film "Au loin des villages" screened in the international competition.
