Swiss art and architecture films at DOKU.ARTS in Amsterdam

11.06.2009

Four Swiss documentary films will be screened at the 4th DOKU.ARTS – International Festival for Films on Art, which will take place in the Filmmuseum Amsterdam (June 11-14, 2009). The festival is entirely devoted to films which portray prominent figures in art and architecture. The films, which will be screened with the filmmakers in attendance, include the following: “Isa Hesse Rabinovitch - Das Grosse Spiel Film” (2008) by Anka Schmid; the film “From somewhere to nowhere” (2009) by Villi Hermann; as well as two films by Christoph Schaub – “Il Girasole - una casa vicino a Verona” (1995) and “Die Reisen des Santiago Calatrava” (1999).
The DOKU.ARTS Festival, founded in Berlin in 2006, explores the connections between the history of cinema and television and art.Andreas Lewin deliberately focuses on a limited number of films – a total of only 24 – and also features a supporting programme with seminars and in-depth film talks and lectures as well. Two films by Christoph Schaub will be screened in conjunction with this year’s theme of films on architecture. Christoph Schaub, who has explored this theme extensively, will participate on June 12 in a seminar about architecture, at which Doris Agotai, professor in Zurich and specialist in spatial concepts in film and architecture, will give a speech with reference to the film series.

The screening of Anka Schmid’s film “Spiegelei” (1969) will precede her film “Isa Hesse Rabinovitch – Das Grosse Spiel Film”, a portrait of the Swiss artist, who passed away five years ago. Villi Hermann accompanies the Swiss photojournalist Andreas Seibert in the film “From somewhere to nowhere” on three trips to China, where he documents the migration from rural regions to metropolises.

The film promotion agency SWISS FILMS is a festival partner and has provided financial support for the participation of the four-member delegation from Switzerland.
