Swiss animation films honoured at Monstra Festival in Lisbon

The 8th Monstra Lisboa Animated Film Festival (March 9-15, 2009) will showcase Swiss animation film productions in a special programme called “Animaçao Suiça”, which has been organised in collaboration with SWISS FILMS. A total of 61 films – screened in five different programmes – will be presented at the oldest film festival in Lisbon. Moreover, eight films from the Lucerne School of Art and Design will be screened in the official programme, six of which will participate in the student animated short films competition. The long-playing animation film “Max & Co” by Frédéric and Samuel Guillaume will participate in the feature films competition. A twelve-member Swiss delegation will travel to Portugal to attend the festival.
The Swiss retrospective traverses generations of Swiss animation filmmaking, showcasing works in five different programmes. The Historical Retrospective highlights 17 films, including “Amok” (1997) by Claudius Gentinetta. The New Talent programme comprises 13 short films, including “Wolkenbruch” (2005) by Simon Eltz – winner of the Swiss Film Prize 2007 as Best Animation Film. The Favez / Barras / Louis Retrospective features seven works by these three filmmakers. While the Georges Schwizgebel Retrospective features 14 films by this Swiss luminary, the homage to Gisèle and Nag Ansorge will highlight 11 films.
The Swiss short films competing in the competition for student animated short films include: “Me and My Monster” by Claudia Röthlin; “Grosse Pläne” by Irmgard Walthert; “Crescendo” by Florian Birrer; “Continental Me” by Franziska Meyer; “In Limbo” by Michelle Ettlin; and “Chrigi” by Anja Kofmel.
Georges Schwizgebel is a member of the international jury for feature films, together with Duscha Kistler, co-director of “Fantoche”, the animation film festival in Baden. Masterclasses will be offered in Lisbon by Georges Schwizgebel, as well as Frédéric and Samuel Guillaume.
An exhibition featuring the originals by Georges Schwizgebel will run in the São Jorge cinema, the heart of the event. In honour of the strong Swiss presence in Lisbon, the Swiss Embassy has organised a reception on March 12. Other Swiss animation filmmakers in Lisbon include Isabelle Favez, Claude Barras, Cédric Louis, Irmgard Walthert, Anja Kofmel, Franziska Meyer and Claudia Röthlin.
