Silver Gentian for “The Giant Buddhas”

At the 54th Trento Film Festival in Northern Italy, the Swiss documentary film “The Giant Buddhas” by Christian Frei won one of the five main festival prizes. This mountain film festival, founded in 1952, ended on Saturday, May 6th, with the award ceremony. The Silver Gentian comes with a prize sum of 1,500 Euro.
This is the third award for “The Giant Buddhas.” The film received the “Silver Dove” at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary Film in 2005, and was bestowed the “Swiss Culture Pearl – Five Best Swiss Films in 2005” by art-tv in January 2006. It was nominated for the Swiss Film Prize and, since its theatrical release, has sold 12,000 movie tickets in Switzerland. With its extraordinary festival career, copies of the film are continuously traveling to various festival events. The mountain film festival Trento is the 24th festival event at which “The Giant Buddhas” has been shown, and it has been invited to approximately a dozen additional festivals.
In the fall of 2006, the film will be released in German movie theatres (Distribution: Kinostar).
