The documentary film “Vol Spécial” was honoured with the Grand Prix IRIS in Berlin for the Best Intercultural TV Programme on October 27, 2012. Together with the Prix Italia in Turin in September, the film “Vol Spécial” and Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) as its coproducer are the laureates of the two most important European television awards.

The international jury of Prix Europa awarded the Grand Prix IRIS for Best Intercultural TV Programme to Fernand Melgar’s documentary film “Vol Spécial.” The multi-award-winning film “Vol spécial” by the Swiss-Spanish director, which premiered in Locarno in 2011, portrays life behind the closed doors of the Frambois prison, a detention centre for illegal migrants, in Geneva. It triggered a major debate on issues concerning the asylum policy – and not just in Switzerland.

Festival for quality in European broadcasting
Since its founding in 1987, Prix Europa has grown into Europe’s largest festival for television, radio and online media programmes. Every year it awards the best European productions in 16 categories with the aim of publicising them throughout Europe. The director general of SRG, Roger de Weck, was elected as the new president of Prix Europa at this year’s edition.
