Swiss documentary filmmaking makes a strong showing in Amsterdam
05.11.2024
With a total of ten film productions or coproductions, this year’s International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (November 4-14, 2024) is showcasing an extensive selection of Swiss documentary films. Eleonora Camizzi’s debut film PICTURES IN MIND as well as ON THE BORDER, coproduced by Mira Film, will both celebrate their world premieres in Amsterdam.
Two Swiss productions have been selected for the Envision Competition, which comprises 12 stylistically unique works: HSLU graduate Eleonora Camizzi confronts her father’s schizophrenia in her experimental documentary PICTURES IN MIND, where a white room with a single window to the outside world provides the visual setting for this conversation between daughter and father.
Also screened in the Envision Competition will be the Italian-Swiss coproduction BESTIARI, ERBARI, LAPIDARI by Martina Parenti and Massimo D'Anolfi. The film, coproduced by Lomotion Filmproduktion, celebrated its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
ON THE BORDER will celebrate its world premiere with a screening in the Frontlight section: a portrait of the Tuareg city of Agadez in Niger, where the failure of the migration agreement with Europe is making itself visible. The film by Gerald Igor Hauzenberger and Gabriela Schild was coproduced by Mira Film, together with Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.
The Polish-Swiss coproduction THE LAST EXPEDITION by Eliza Kubarska will be screened in the Luminous section: a portrait of the Polish mountaineer Wanda Rutkiewicz, coproduced by Tilt Production.
The futuristic animated documentary MY HOMELAND by Tabarak Abbas, produced at HEAD – Genève, has been selected for the IDFA Competition for Youth Documentary.
The section “Signed” will showcase THE LANDSCAPE AND THE FURY by Nicole Vögele (production: Beauvoir Films) recipient of the Grand Prix of Festival Visions du Réel and the Doc Alliance Award, and REAS by Lola Arias (coproduction: Mira Film Basel), awarded the Sebastiane Award in San Sebastian and the Mermaid Award as well as the Golden Alexander Award in Thessaloniki
The selection for “Best of Fests” includes VALENTINA E I MUOSTRI by Francesca Scalisi (DOK MOBILE); DIDY by Gaël Kamilindi and François-Xavier Destors (Adok Films); and SISTERS’ TALE by Leila Amini (Mira Film Basel, La Belle Film).
Documentary film industry gathers at IDFA Forum
