Eight works from Switzerland will be screened at the most important film festival in Brazil: the São Paulo International Film Festival, also known as Mostra. Four of these works are debut films and will thus be screened in the New Directors Competition, reserved exclusively for debut and second films. Three Swiss filmmakers will attend the festival in the Brazilian metropolis.

Eight films from Switzerland will be screened at the 37th São Paulo International Film Festival (October 18-31, 2013). Four of these works will be screened in the New Directors Competition and are thus in the running for the Audience Award and the International Jury Award. In addition, four other films will be screened in the International Perspective section.

100 debut and second films in competition
Basil da Cunha’s debut fiction film “Até ver a luz,” which celebrated its world premiere in Cannes last May, will be presented in the New Directors Competition. Participation in this competition is reserved exclusively for international filmmakers who have not produced more than two feature-length productions. The fiction film “L'Armée du Salut” by Abdellah Taïa (coproduction: Rita Productions, Geneva), which celebrated its world premiere in September at the Mostra in Venice, will also participate in the competition, together with the two feature-length documentary films “Glückspilze” by Verena Endtner as well as “Cantos” by Charlie Petersmann. A total of 100 films are in the running for the Audience Award and the International Jury Award. Film directors Basil da Cunha and Charlie Petersmann accompany the screenings of the films in São Paulo, thanks to support provided by SWISS FILMS.

Four films screened in International Perspective
“Vielen Dank für Nichts,” the new fiction film by Oliver Paulus and Stefan Hillebrand, will celebrate its international premiere at the Mostra in São Paulo, with Oliver Paulus in attendance. Starring in the film is Joel Basman, Switzerland’s Shooting Star 2008. Three further Swiss film productions and coproductions will also be screened in the International Perspective section: “Night Train To Lisbon” (Nachtzug nach Lissabon) by Danish director Bille August (coproduction: C-Films, Zurich); “Les grandes ondes (à l'ouest)” by Lionel Baier; and “Die Frau des Polizisten” by Philip Gröning (coproduction, ventura film, Meride), which was honoured with the Special Jury Prize at the festival in Venice. The Mostra Internacional del Cinema de São Paulo will present some 350 films over the course of two weeks.
