Cannes Film Festival: Swiss Participation
19.04.2007
After the relaunching of Swiss film culture last year in Cannes, expressed through a Swiss Day in the section “Tous les cinémas du monde” and a succeeded presence in international competition with the animation film “Banquise”, there will be no Swiss films represented in this year’s Official Program (1) of the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from May 16-27, 2007, celebrating its 60th anniversary. There were only few candidates in the run for a selection into the Official Program, due to irregular production intervals in Switzerland.
The fiction film “Home”, for example, by Switzerland’s hope bearer Ursula Meier, which was developed last year in the “Ateliers du Festival” in Cannes, will only start shooting this summer after the financing of this with France coproduced film is secured. The 38-year-old Elena Tatti, co-founder of Box Productions in Lausanne, who, with Thierry Spycher, is responsible for the production, will be participating at this year’s European event, “Producers on the Move”, to which she was recommended by SWISS FILMS. This event, organised by European Film Promotion, allows young producers from all over Europe to expand their network and promises a prominent appearance at the largest film festival worldwide.
Another hope bearer, Frédéric Mermoud, originally from Canton Valais now living in Paris, will present the short film “Le créneau” in Cannes at the “Semaine de la critique” starring Emmanuelle Devos and Hippolyte Girardot; the film having been produced for the collection “Écrire pour un acteur… une actrice”, initiated by Canal+.
At the international Pavillon of Film Music, sponsored by Ennio Morricone, Switzerland is one of the five countries, whom an evening has been dedicated to. “Tribute to Switzerland” (on May 23) will be arranged by the UFMC Switzerland (Union of Film Music Composers).
On occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Cannes International Film Festival, SWISS FILMS has put together a list of all Swiss films presented and all Swiss jury members in Cannes between 1964 and 2006.
1) The parallel sections “Semaine de la critique” and “Quizaine des réalisateurs” will be communicating their selection on April 26, 2007 and on May 3, 2007.
