Bettina Oberli wins NDR Director’s Prize in Schwerin

Bettina Oberli was awarded the Director’s Prize for her film “Im Nordwind” at the 15th FilmKunstFest in Schwerin on 8 May 2005. The prize, sponsored by “Norddeutschen Rundfunk” (NDR), amounts to EUR 5,000. The film director, who is from Bernese Oberland and graduated from the “Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich” (HGKZ), was present at the festival and received the award personally from the jury.
The jury emphasised in its statement: “Film director Bettina Oberli has succeeded in guiding the actors to such an outstanding degree that the result is an unabatedly clear depiction of the microcosm of a family. The viewer is witness to the three protagonists’ loneliness, helplessness and inability to communicate while becoming painfully aware of the fact that the fragile framework of a family has often already collapsed before the individuals concerned even realize it. In a consistent and subtle manner, Bettina Oberli’s visual expression challenges and nevertheless protects the characters—without ever betraying them.” The feature-film debut of “Im Nordwind” premiered in the Zabaltegi competition section of the International Film Festival in San Sebastian in September 2004 and was nominated for the Swiss Film Prize 2005.
At the 15th FilmKunstFest in Schwerin, which was held from 4 to 8 May, two Swiss films were screened in the feature-film competition: “Im Nordwind” and “KussKuss” by Sören Senn. The Swiss embassy in Berlin has collaborated with the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns Schwerin, where the festival was held, to offer viewers a glimpse of Swiss filmmaking. The program included a series of films on the topic of immigration and a panel discussion, together with the film directors who had been invited.
