Awarding of the "Quartz" Swiss Film Prize 2008

Eight "Quartz" awards were presented as the Swiss Film Prize 2008 in Solothurn on January 23, 2008. "Der Freund" by Micha Lewinsky (production: Langfilm, Freienstein) won the award for "Best Fiction Film". The award for "Best Documentary Film" went to "Heimatklänge" by Stefan Schwietert (maximage, Zurich). The award for "Best Short Film" was presented to "Auf der Strecke" by Reto Caffi (Blush Films, Zurich). The award for "Best Actress" went to Sabine Timoteo for her performance in the film "Nebenwirkungen", whilst Bruno Cathomas won the award for "Best Actor" for the leading role in the film "Chicken Mexicaine". The prize for "Best Emerging Actor or Actress", a new category as of this year, went to Philippe Graber for his performance in the film "Der Freund". The prize for "Best Screenplay" went to Jeanne Waltz for her film "Pas Douce", which she had written and directed. The “Special Jury Prize” was presented to Stress and Mich Gerber for their music composition for the film "Breakout".
Ten years after ist inception, the Swiss Film Prize 2008 presents new innovations: a new, exceptional location in Solothurn and the new "Quartz" award, created by artist Sylvie Fleury. The "Quartz" awards were presented at a gala ceremony with 650 guests in the CIS-Halle in Solothurn. Susanne Kunz was the master of ceremonies, with guest appearances and award presentations made by actress Stephanie Glaser, film director Bettina Oberli ("Die Herbstzeitlosen"), SRG Director Armin Walpen, and film directors Jean-Stéphane Bron ("Mais im Bundeshuus") and Fredi M. Murer ("Vitus"). Fifteen films, five screenplays and eleven actors and actresses were nominated for the "Quartz" award in eight categories.



The jury for the Swiss Film Prize 2008, presided over by actress Marthe Keller, was comprised of the following members: Daniel de Roulet, author; Peter Dinges, member of the German Federal Film Board (FFA); Florian Keller, journalist; Pierre Monnard, film director; Theres Scherer-Kollbrunner, producer; and Jacqueline Veuve, film director. The "Quartz" Swiss Film Prize 2008 is under the auspices of the Federal Office of Culture. SWISS FILMS is responsible for the general organisation and promotion of this national award. The award ceremony is organised in collaboration with SRG SSR idée suisse and the film festivals of Solothurn, Nyon and Locarno, as well as with generous support from the event partners Swiss Life, Swiss Post, Egli Film and Ringier.
