Award for Swiss documentary film in Barcelona
08.10.2008
“La reina del Condón” by Silvana Ceschi and Reto Stamm was honoured with the award for Best First Documentary at the 8th Docúpolis International Documentary Film Festival in Barcelona (September 30-October 5, 2008). The award provides support for the international distribution of the film by the Spanish firm Ermedia.
The film, produced by Dschoint Ventschr in Zurich in collaboration with Soilsiú Films from Ireland, portrays the life of a woman from the former DDR who accompanies a Cuban captain she met in Rostock to the island in the Caribbean shortly after the Cuban Revolution and went on to become Fidel Castro’s (sexual) education minister. In the land of machismo, the emancipated German woman battled for women’s rights to sexual fulfilment. Her breaking of taboos led to her fame throughout the entire country overnight as “the Queen of Condoms”.
The Docúpolis Festival, which has been organised in Barcelona by the Tercer Ojo International Documentary Association since 2001, devotes a particular amount of attention to debut documentary films. The award presented to one of the twelve first-documentary works screened in a special competition section is in the form of support by Ermedia, the Spanish world distribution firm.
