16.08.2008
Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Los Angeles has announced the winner of the Student Academy Award 2008: the short film “Auf der Strecke” (On The Line) by Swiss director Reto Caffi will be honoured with the “Honorary Foreign Student Film Award 2008”. The “Honorary Foreign Student Film Award” will be awarded on the occasion of a solemn presentation of prizes of the Annual Student Academy Awards, on June 7, in Beverly Hills. The Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences has assessed the graduate films of film-academies from 29 countries. “Auf der Strecke” (On The Line) is a Swiss-German coproduction and Reto Caffi´s graduate film at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne (KMH).
The 30-minute fiction film with Roeland Wiesnekker as the leading character could already convince the jury and the audience of numerous international film festivals before receiving Hollywood´s credit: after the Quartz for the “Best Short Film” of this year´s Swiss Film Prize, “Auf der Strecke” awarded the Grand Prix of the jury at the International Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, the world´s greatest short film festival. In Germany, the film awarded the “Förderpreis für den besten Absolventenfilm 2008” in the context of the “Babelsberger Medienpreise”. On the occasion of its first presentation in the USA at the 17th Aspen Shortsfest in the beginning of April, it won the “Best Student” award.
To win a prize like the “Student Academy Award” emphasizes the dynamic and the international reputation of the local short film-making. For the first time ever, a Swiss short film won the prestigious trophy in the category “Honorary Foreign Film”. In 2001, Michael Schaerer´s “Warmth” awarded the “Student Academy Award” in the category “Alternative Fiction”. In 2004, “Pas de deux” by Lawrence Grimm (HGKZ) was nominated for the “Student Oscar” in the category “Best Foreign Student Film”.
In Switzerland, “Auf der Strecke” will be screened in conjunction with the Short Film Night (16.5. in Lucerne, 30.5. in Berne).
