Shot in the wake of Blood Diamond, the film explores the kaleidoscopic, infernal story of Sierra Leone. It is a strong film about strong people. Their joy in each moment seems to free energies and power, tapping a richness from somewhere deep in human nature. Beauty and shock abound. We wade through the tortured aftermath, then depart through their fire of memories, and the rubble. Sierra Leoneans abhor aggression. They want that war never returns. The daily hardships, the parasites embedded in human flesh, the 4000 people who survived despite limbs severed by child soldiers; the corruption, the poverty…. To live, many break stones every day for very little money. They lead us through a, literally, mysterious tunnel… We see on the lively dashboard, decorated with the likes of teddy bears and sea horses, a perplexing sticker: “Let my enemy life long. You cannot stop my destiny!”
