In Iragna, Ticino, my grandparents were often told “You've come to steal our bread”. They were among those who emigrated to Switzerland during the economic boom of the 1960s, where the Italian labour force was called and crossed the border en masse.
I dug into the archives of Swiss television in order to find my grandfather Emilio and reconstruct his experience, in a country torn between intolerance and attempts at integration.
A Iragna, in Ticino, ai miei nonni veniva spesso detto “Siete venuti a rubarci il pane”. Loro furono tra quelli che durante il boom economico negli anni ‘60 emigrarono in Svizzera, dove venne chiamata la manodopera italiana che in massa oltrepassò il confine. Ho scavato nell’archivio della televisione Svizzera per trovare mio nonno Emilio e ricostruire il suo vissuto, in un paese in bilico tra l’intolleranza e i tentativi di integrazione.
