This is the story of Betsirana, a woman driven by a childhood dream of one day driving a “bush taxi”, who is at the same time a mother who reigns supreme over her own vanilla plantations on Madagascar’s east coast, and whose family is an exceptionally oligarchic clan belonging to the Betsimisaraka ethnic group. It was her father, “Adolphe de Londres” who on the island of St. Marie forced Betsirana to learn all about the traditional cultivation of vanilla, a climbing orchid which is the “green gold” of Madagascar, an occupation that has its own special fascination. Despite the difficulties which arise, due to fluctuations in the vanilla market, the resourceful Betsirana works hard to make sure that her dream of driving a bush taxi can come true…
