Mankind’s relationship with the “bowels of the earth” is one that goes back beyond the dawn of history to a time when our ancestors took refuge in caves. It is a relationship which has continued however, for this is one “umbilical cord” that has never been severed. While our original interest in the underground world clearly reflected a strategy
for survival, it is far less clear today what it is exactly that still attracts some of our species to these lower depths. Through tunnels, mines, hidden military fortifications and grottoes, this documentary takes us on a rare tour of the “innards” of Switzerland, or if you prefer “from the bottom up”, in the company of people who live, work and “daydream” in dark places.

Il rapporto tra l'uomo e le viscere della terra è storia di millenni: da quando i primi abitanti del globo trovarono rifugio nelle caverne fino a oggi, il cordone ombelicale che ci lega non è mai stato tagliato. Ma se gli imperativi di sopravvivenza sono certamente all'origine del nostro interesse per l'habitat sotterraneo, ci si può forse interrogare sulle ragioni che giustificano ancora oggi l'avventura dell'uomo sottoterra. Tra gallerie e miniere, fortificazioni militari e grotte il documentario propone un insolito percorso attraverso una Svizzera «vista dal di dentro» o meglio «dal di sotto» con le testimonianze di chi ogni giorno ci vive, lavora, sogna.
