Nagercoil, in southern India. Mala earns her living weaving silk and lives in a one-room house with her parents and nine brothers and sisters. Theirs is a “picturesque” daily routine that revolves around the weaving loom and the TV set. But Mala wants to escape from the poverty of her large family… The neighbour Santa Cruz is a healer and magician who exorcises evil spirits, with the help of the Virgin Mary and Ganesh. In fact he is a fishmonger, but he is unable to make enough that way to feed his family. Soon he must find a husband for his granddaughter, and he is thinking of sacrificing his tuft of shaggy hair… Muthiah is in a quite different situation. The fact that his wedding videos are much in demand among members of the upper cast fills him with pride. Taking fastidious care of his body, Muthiah tries to stay young and attractive, able to stand up to the very demanding requirements of the lengthy ceremonies and to be sure to capture on film the important rituals and personnages. His own wedding however has not made him a happy man…
