Checkmate is the name Francesca Molo has given to the bar in the cantonal psychiatric clinic. It is a place where the “sane” and the “insane” come face to face. The whole film takes place in this space reserved for socialising and discussing. The limit between normality and madness is intangible and hard to define, since human nature is fragile, and at times incomprehensible. These troubled souls talk about themselves without shame, telling stories that transform the bar of Casvegno into the scene of a game, being played without regard for the consequences. Words, phrases and faces come and go. In the end, who wins and who loses? But what if there were neither winners nor losers? What if a world of nuances were to replace this world of black and white, and the dividing line between them and us were to become blurred?
Francesca Molo ha ribattezzato il bar della Clinica Psichiatrica Cantonale, dove si incontrano i «malati» e i «sani». La storia si svolge tutta lì, perché questo è il luogo della socializzazione e della parola. Si sa, i confini tra normalità e pazzia sono sottili, impalpabili, così come è fragile e talvolta insondabile la natura umana. Queste anime sofferenti raccontano storie senza pudori, storie che riescono a trasformare il bar di Casvegno in un luogo dove si gioca una partita imprevedibile. E alla fine, parola dopo parola, volto dopo volto, chi sono i vincitori, chi sono i vinti? E se non ci fossero più né vincitori, né vinti e se, tra noi e loro, si aprisse un mondo non più in bianco o nero ma più ricco di sfumature?
