During the Second World War Jewish refugees were often granted sanctuary in Switzerland arbitrarily and purely by chance. The terms of their stay were subject to the restrictive regulations of the Federal Police for Foreigners. Fanny, Gaston and Max Popowski all had different experiences, in which the officials, commanders at the camps and also the Swiss people played significant roles.
