A film about emigration, the “exodus” brought about by the construction of the two Gothard tunnels – the railway tunnel (1872-1882) and the road tunnel (1969-1976). People migrated from one country to another, from one civilization to another, and different social mores and customs were confronted with one another. The intention was to show the parallels between the two tunnel constructions and to make economic, financial and social comparisons. In between the two unveiling, the film depicts the essence of that which lay behind the veiling cloth, and the way in which the construction of the Gothard tunnels was determined by both the bourgeoisie and the working classes.

Il film mette in parallelo i due grandi trafori del massiccio del San Gottardo: lo scavo della galleria ferroviaria (1872‑1882) e lo scavo del tunnel autostradale (iniziato nel 1969). È dunque un film sull’emigrazione e sullo spostamento delle forze lavoratrici. Da un lato, il film ci mostra una parte di storia svizzera (quella del XIX secolo borghese) narrata attraverso personaggi quali Alfred Escher ­- fondatore del “Credito Svizzero” e presidente della Società ferroviaria del San Gottardo (Gotthardbahn) – e Louis Favre – “self made man” ginevrino e appaltatore della galleria – dall’altro mette in luce fatti storici come la quotidianità della vita degli emigranti e avvenimenti come lo sciopero degli operai del San Gottardo (Goeschenen, 1875) che fu violentemente represso dalla milizia svizzera. Nel film affiorano inoltre problematiche comuni ai due trafori: economiche, sociali e politiche. “San Gottardo” si articola su due livelli narrativi; il primo è una ricostruzione storica degli avvenimenti del primo traforo (tecnica del “tableaux vivants”) il secondo invece tocca direttamente la realtà presente del traforo autostradale (accostamento documentaristico). Il film si conclude con un quadro sintetico nel quale la ricostruzione storica dell’inaugurazione del monumento di Alfred Escher si integra sul fondo della Bahnhofstrasse di Zurigo ora “centro mondiale del commercio dell’oro”. #
