A film adaptation of the play, “Stay Leave”, by Bernard Chartreux, staged by Michel Toman. Both the play and film provide an account of René Caillié’s adventure: completely after the model of Jules Verne, Caillié “undertook and completed the most astounding journey of modern times with limited means” and “discovered” Timbuktu in the year 1828. Others had attempted it before him but either gave up or died in the attempt. The play traces the dangers, sufferings, mishaps and triumphs that beset the explorer. The stage version and the film emphasize a more poetic presentation of the author and of René Caillié himself.
