In the space of a few months, Ingrid Wildi travels on several occasions to and from Zurich, where her brother, Hans Rudolf Wildi – who finds his German-sounding name an embarrassing burden – is battling with serious depression. By means of fragments that are sometimes incidental and sometimes circuitous, Ingrid Wildi lets us see and hear her brother. Seated directly opposite the camera, his body slumped forward with weight and weariness, he speaks in a monotonous, disenchanted voice. Different subjects – philosophy, physical appearance, day-to-day racism, immigration and even astrophysics – succeed and interact with one another in the course of the video’s sequences. Yet in some ways, Ingrid Wildi also questions the medication prescribed for her brother, establishing, with some humour, a link between the pharmaceutical and the soft drinks industries. By contrast with that standard medical treatment, she offers her brother a sister’s attention, responding to him sympathetically and, as we sense, with a great deal of authentic, caring affection.
