“Foreign bread has seven crusts” is an old saying in the Romansch-speaking Surselva region. It is also the title of the film by Christian Schocher which tells the story of people who find themselves labouring under the same conditions as foreign seasonal workers in their own canton. The men and women of Surselva and the central area of canton Grisons find themselves mere guest workers in the literal sense, working in the great hotel palaces of Engadine as pageboys and waiters, chambermaids and waitresses. For decades local people had been the backbone of the Canton's tourism industry, until the 1960's, when they were replaced by immigrants.
