Somewhat surprisingly, the largest Japanese community living outside Japan today is in Brazil, where five generations of exile Japanese reside. Since 1908 increasing numbers of Japanese sought a way out of Japan’s economic crisis and many migrated to Brazil. Their journey took them half around the globe to a country and culture which couldn’t be more different to theirs, but today, many of their Brazilian grandchildren look for work in Japan. Nipo Brazil travels to Japan and Brazil and encounters people with a mixture of Japanese manners and Brazilian mentality, and questions what meaning cultural identity has in a globalised world.
