Most of the armament factories along the Rhine in which Soviet deportees were worked and starved to death in the Second World War belonged to the Swiss, although of course the Russians were unaware of this fact. Indeed the poor wretches looked to Switzerland as their only hope. Across the Rhine Swiss customs officials and soldiers observed them through binoculars. The first Russians who managed to escape to Switzerland and to be interned there were regarded with a mixture of fear and curiosity by the local women, unaware of the sufferings these men had endured in Germany, and of the fate that awaited them when they would eventually be sent back to Stalin's USSR.
