The mere idea of having to face a move into a “home for the aged” gives rise to fear: fear of growing old, fear of dementia, fear of death. What is it really like for the elderly? And how will we experience it? The day of arrival is a special moment as the transition is made from the outside to the inside: what is the impact? We stepped inside. Far beyond our questions and our own fears, the residents of the home revealed an immense amount of vitality. Very much alive, even to the point of embracing death; agile in spite of being immobile; and unimpaired though disabled. Although it is possible that a resident at the Salem retirement home no longer knows where he or she lives, the recollection of skiing, of speeding downhill, in the snow remains vivid.
