A pavilion as an experience? Contemporary architect Peter Zumthor designed this unusual Swiss contribution to the World Exhibition of 2000 in Hanover. His “Switzerland sounding box” (Klangkörper Schweiz) was built from three thousand cubic metres of wood from Swiss larch and spruce trees, held together by steel wires. Not a single nail or screw was necessary for its construction. Unexpected sounds? Over 200 soloists performed every imaginable kind of music in the course of the exhibition, never in the same area of the pavilion, transforming this labyrinth of wood into a true sounding box. As required by the original concept of Daniel Ott, accordeons and dulcimers provided a “dramatised” background of sound at all times. The writing on the wall? Reminding us that Switzerland is unique for its linguistic variety, phrases and words from different sources – prose literature, poems, songs and newspaper articles – were projected onto the wooden beams. Good enough to eat and drink? Renowned caterer Max Rigendinger served the typical culinary delights of Helvetia.
