Eight very different individuals invite the viewer to spend a day in their company. For decades the fascinating land of Kirghizia has been locked away behind the iron curtain. With its independence in 1992 however everything suddenly changed in the land of the poet Aitmatov. Overnight the teachings of the communists ceased to have any meaning. This was a real challenge to each and every individual. “Now I am my own lord and master”, says Ernis, a farmer who is now trying to make a new life for himself on his own farmland in the mountains. “Not that it was all bad before”, is the more nuanced view expressed by Victor Tscherkassov, who lives on the last of the old kolkhoz collective farms. As for the young beauty queen Kanykey, who is also a qualified surgeon, “It is better to live in a storm than in a bog”.
