Roberto Corti is a zookeeper. He is charming and clever and no one suspects that he can neither read nor write. One day when he is in charge of delivering a chimpanzee to a TV studio for a programme about animals he accidentally ends up as the involuntary “surprise guest” on a highly intellectual literary programme, upsetting its entire routine. At the same time he falls head over heels in love with the show's producer, the beautiful Juliette, and foolishly allows himself to be talked into accepting her offer of a job as a literary critic. The idea of someone who can neither read nor write playing a central role in a programme about literature leads to an absurd situation rich in complications and Roberto soon finds the pressure mounting on him. When Juliette begins to respond to the love he bears for her, the zookeeper's terrible secret becomes almost unbearable… and the date of the next broadcast is approaching fast.
