“To be or not to be…” The Turkish actress bombards the public in Skopje’s Turkish-Albanian theatre with Hamlet’s immortal words, but her voice is lost in the heady richness of the production’s sound track. In the new Balkan republic of Macedonia, many are those who, like Hamlet, question the purpose of life: the Turkish tobacco planters in the mountains of the East, the gypsies in the ghetto of Skopje, those living in Albanian immigrant and farming villages, in the mountain town of Krushevo, or at the cultural centre of Vlach, and the Serbs of Skopje in their TV “tower of Babel”. Journalists of the five minority programmes of the Macedonian state television MTV kindly act as guides, providing insights into the burning topics of the moment as they see them, the subjects of coming TV reports. Just how easy it is to cross the shifting borders between information, education and propaganda soon becomes obvious. Their teams work with equipment provided by Switzerland in the framework of a United Nations Peace-keeping Conference project in Ex-Yugoslavia.
