A romantic-direful fable about love, dependency and loss with a fatal ending. The Alto Rhapsody op. 53 for male-voice choir composed by Johannes Brahms constitutes the musical leitmotif. The underlying text deals with three stanzas of Goethe’s poem “Harzreise im Winter” selected by Brahms. The poem describes the heartache of a man who is despised by the world and becomes a despiser of mankind himself.
