After a divine inspiration, artist Gustav Arthur Gräser from Siebenbürgen burned his works and became Gusto Gräser, nature worshipper and wandering prophet. Together with other dropouts, he founded the Monte Verita love commune above Ascona. One of his followers with whom he fasted in a cave in Ticino for weeks was Hermann Hesse, who portrays his master in “Demian” as the bearer of hope for a future paradise on eartth. Gräser died lonely in an attic room in Munich.
