Peter, a kind-hearted bakery owner, falls in love with Helen, his nurse, while hospitalized. During an intimate moment, Helen drugs Peter, and her accomplices replace his heart with a mechanical one. Devastated by her disappearance, Peter searches for Helen in vain. Haunted by unanswered questions, he attempts suicide, fails, and joins the army, seeking death on the battlefield.
