In 1873, people from all over the world come to the tiny village of Göschenen in Switzerland, to work on the biggest construction site of modern times: the Gotthard tunnel. Following the lives of three young people in the years of rapid industrial expansion, this two-part TV movie tells the story of this gigantic construction project, which allowed the European national states to move closer together.

I protagonisti di questa storia sono Anna, la figlia del carrettiere di Göschenen, l'ingegnere tedesco Max e il minatore italiano Tommaso. In questa atmosfera piena di entusiasmo e di successo dei primi anni di costruzione della galleria del San Gottardo, Anna, Max e Tommaso si incontrano. È il duro lavoro della costruzione dell’opera edile del secolo a legarli. Un legame che è ben presto spezzato dai tumulti d'amore e dalle nuove tecnologie. Alla fine da amici e amanti diventeranno anche avversari.
