Timmermann, who lays tiles for a living, decides to become an actor, and throws himself body and soul into learning Goethe's Faust. His workmates are not exactly delighted at this turn of events. When he does eventually make his debut as an actor, it is not in the theatre as he had planned, but on the building site.
