It is 1862, at a mountain inn in the Swiss canton of Valais. Each winter, the owners entrust the establishment to two caretakers. This year Gaspard, who has been coming for years, is accompanied by the young Ulrich, a novice. Upon his arrival, Ulrich meets Lise, the innkeepers’ daughter, for whom he feels a strong attraction. When he finally decides to meet up with her, it is too late: access to the valley has been blocked by an abundant snowfall. Ulrich is devastated. The next day, Gaspard, off on a hunting trip, does not return. Will the young man, haunted by his fears and wild imaginings, survive?
