Upon the initiative of two Swiss journalists – both of them passionate mountaineers and skiers – a project was launched in the spring of 2011, to organize the first ski race in Afghanistan. Bamiyan lies on an elevated plain surrounded by mountain peaks with of an altitude of 5000 meters. In the past 10 years, these mountains and the presence of armed forces protected the population from war and the Taliban. The entire operation was in danger of collapsing several times. But in the end, twelve highly motivated young men stood at the starting line – and most of them had never been on skis until two weeks prior.
