On March 7th 2008, the management of Swiss Federal Railways announced their intention to privatize the maintenance of freight cars and to delocalize that of locomotives. At once, the 430 workers hit by the decision came out on strike. The struggle lasted 30 days. The ministry of transport was forced to intervene: the Railways had to withdraw their plan and a round table was set up, charged with ensuring the survival and growth of the Bellinzona workshops. But trust between the parties had been seriously undermined and getting back to work was fraught with difficulties. The workmen have won the first battle but not the war.
