L' exceptionnelle et charismatique Ingeborg Bachmann a conquis avec sa poésie le bastion masculin de la littérature germanophone. Bien qu'elle soit encore jeune, Bachmann se trouve au sommet de sa carrière. La relation qu'elle entretient avec Max Frisch est passionnée, toutefois des frictions professionnelles commencent à troubler l'harmonie. Quand Ingeborg va mal, ce sont ses amis qui la soutiennent. Lors d'un voyage dans le désert, elle se découvre elle-même et, surtout, retrouve le chemin de l'écriture.
