Le film se focalise sur un monde abstrait dans lequel l'industrialisation a atteint son plus haut degré d'achèvement. Le personnage principal ne trouve pas ses marques dans cette société et s'en échappe. Livré à lui-même, il cherche à parvenir à la perfection espérée. Après l'échec de toutes ses tentatives, peu avant et juste après la folie, un monde bien plus riche que la perfection dont la quête le tourmente se révèle à lui.
