Fin du XVIIIe s. : Orphelins, Georg et Alfons franchissent le Grand-Saint-Bernard. Alfons veut devenir soldat, tandis que Georg, malade, reste au couvent. Il se lie d’amitié avec Resi, élève en secret le chiot Barry et apprend à lire. Rivalité avec le novice Célestin, qu’un blizzard oblige à coopérer. Georg sauve Barry et Célestin, gagne sa place au couvent et rêve de devenir instituteur.
