Cesare, un ancien passeur, découvre le cadavre de son neveu Fausto dans une vallée de montagne du Piémont. Sa quête de l’assassin finit par attirer les soupçons sur lui. Par ailleurs, il est harcelé par un jeune villageois rebelle : Sergio qui, désireux d’échapper à la vallée et à son père, veut se rendre sur une alpe pour faire passer la frontière à des réfugiés abandonnés. Pour aider le jeune et les réfugiés, Cesare fait face à son destin…
