Peter, un boulanger au grand cœur, tombe éperdument amoureux d'Hélène, son infirmière, pendant son séjour à l'hôpital. Lors d'un moment intime, Hélène drogue Peter, et ses complices remplacent son cœur par un cœur mécanique. Dévasté par sa disparition, Peter cherche Hélène en vain. Hanté par des questions sans réponses, il tente de se suicider, échoue, et s'engage dans l'armée, cherchant la mort sur le champ de bataille.
