Born 1944 in Vienna, Austria. Studies media science, German language and literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna and completes acting training at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and Berlin. Afterwards he founds his own group, the “Theater der Courage”. Directed over 40 films for cinema and television. Winner of the Silver Nymph of Monaco, the British Academy Award and the Golden Romy in 2001 and 2017, both for Best Screenplay.
