Daniel Ruchat beginnt seine Berufslehre als Gefängniswärter. P. B., wegen versuchten Mordes angeklagt, wird im Lausanner Gefängnis Bois-Mermet einquartiert. Während den folgenden Tagen und Monaten erlernen die beiden Männer ihr neues Leben in dieser Anstalt. Dabei führen sie den Zuschauer durch die Tragikomik dieser kleinen Gesellschaft.
